Cold Weather in California?

Although it rarely happens, it DOES get cold in Southern California… Of course my version of cold is any temp below 60 (then again, I am desert native.) This winter we’ve definitely had some bouts of COLD cold! But you know what that means? Time for layers and one of my favorite accessories… scarves!!!!

Black, white, hot pink OH MY! Love these colors together! A scarf is an easy way to make a colorless, boring outfit fun and bold!

This outfit came together with the help of my all my favorite places to shop… mainly Ross and sample sales!!! The gorgeous coat I’m wearing is from an Abbott & Main sample sale and I scored it for a mere $35!!! The material is incredible soft and the details on the coat are endless. Truly an amazing find!

On my ankle is a unique piece of jewelry I found at a small boutique in L.A. It is meant to be worn over your shoes and works like a basic anklet. This scarf I found in the lost and found at my job, and so after it had been there a while, I took it home, washed it and made it my own.

Although I prefer the heat, ain’t nothin wrong with a few weeks of cold weather to allow my coats and scarves to get a work out!

Oh Jeffrey Campbell, how I love thee…

Alright guys and dolls… if you’ve been following me, you know about Jeffrey Campbell shoes. I was late on the trend, but discovered JC at the beginning of this year and it really was love at first sight! What’s not to love about he variety of textures, fabrics and colors? What’s not to love about the the wedges, the heels or lack there of a heel?! Or what about all those intricate, rich looking embellishments?!

JC shoes are really like pieces of art you can wear. Normally I am not one to frivolously spend on shoes, however I don’t see it as buying up a bunch of shoes. Instead I see it as building up my art collection. Isn’t that a great justification?! Justified or not… I am addicted to JC shoes and may need a family and friends intervention at some point. ;)

I recently added these 3 pairs new pairs to my collection (all on sale of course!):

I definitely need to consider some sort of shelving system because my shoe collection… uhhh, I mean ART collection is out of control!

Do you like any of these and would you dare to wear any of these? The heel less platforms aren’t as difficult to walk in as you might think!

Corsets for curves!

Corsets are great because they hold everything where it should be: gut in, boobs up! All ladies (especially those with curves) should have a corset in their wardrobe!

I recommend starting off with a simple black corset with a steel busk. You can find one like this on eBay for less than $20. For corset beginners, I suggest going for the cheaper versions, made with plastic boning. Plastic boned corsets will start to lose their shape over a handful of wears (although you can still rock them, even if they are slightly out of shape), and they are not nearly as expensive as a fully steel boned corset which will run you at least 100+. The advantage of paying more for a steel boned corset is that it will hold its hourglass shape and is usually made with higher quality materials and fabrics. You can be sure a steel boned corset will last you much longer than the cheaper, plastic boned corset.

The great thing about corsets is that can be worn so many different ways and are always flattering to the figure no matter how big or how small you are. The cut of most corsets, whether its an overbust or an underbust, will create the most beautiful curves on ANY body shape thick or thin.

Corsets, oh my.

Try pairing a corset with skinny jeans, and a rockin’ pair of heels or wear it over a tailored white button up and a pencil skirt! Above, you can see I’ve created an outfit for going out on the town with an overbust corset, and then a more conservative outfit using an underbust corset over a tailored button up. You can either showoff your beautiful shoulders, or choose to cover up a little more with a cropped jacket or shrug. The possibilities are endless with a corset!

This year at the Burning Man festival I created a couple of my outfits/costumes from the use of corsets. One outfit was very burlesque, including a sweet mini top hat that I glued at least one hundred Swarovski crystals to in the shape of the Man. The bustle was found on Etsy and the corset is from eBay.

Another outfit I created using a simple black corset was my “post-apocalyptic warrior” sort of look. The BMorg asked the particpants not to bring feathers to the playa this year, due to the shedding factor and creating a mess. For the “feather” shrug I am wearing I simply used craft foam to create my own feathers and glued them all to some ribbon and felt, and added a magnificent piece to this outfit.

Finally, a more conservative, yet still fashionable and classy ensemble I created using a corset over a pencil skirt and turtleneck knitted top. I wore this outfit to a movie premiere at the Egyptian theater in Hollywood. Obviously, you can make an outfit like this less “costumey” by simply not wearing a mini top hat.

Whether you are going out to a club, being the best dressed person in the office orĀ  costuming, one thing is for sure:

Corsets: the best fashion garment for curvy (and skinny) girls everywhere!

Goth’s not dead.

Although I am not an avid follower of the “goth scene” I do love gothic fashion. There certainly is a difference between “high school” gothic fashion, and elegant, more mature gothic styling. That means leaving those extremely riveted, faded black bondage pants in the attic. Naturally, the color palette of any gothic ensemble will mainly be blacks, grays, whites and reds; all lovely colors to build an outfit with.

These photos are from a casual day out to lunch with a friend of mine. He busted out his iPhone, and we went on a photo taking spree.

These pants are black on black leopard print I found at Ross for 10 bucks. The jacket is plain black with faux fur around the collar and wrists and has a zipper front closure, with a belt that wraps around as well, $25 on clearance from Hot Topic. Add in a few silver funky accessories and some hot platform boots, and the outfit is complete! Oh yes, and red lips. Always red lips.

You just can’t go wrong with all black, leather and fur. ;)
