Pin Up Style, Baby!

Remember I went to a pinup shoot a while back? (In case you missed it, you can read about it HERE.) I helped style some of the girls, and I got a few sessions of my own in. Of the four different looks we shot, I’ve received the sets from two of the photographers that day. They came out so great and I am one lucky girl getting to participate in the day’s festivities.

Isaac’s photos came out absolutely stunning and I couldn’t be more honored to have had him shoot me. On a personal note, I’m not one for being tan, however this particular set of photos inspires me to get a little more sun this summer! Hehehee. Although I must say, Isaac captured me as a porcelain doll. Thank you Isaac!

This is one of my most favorite ensembles I’ve ever thrown together. It’s classy, elegant and has that racy, vintage pin up feel to it. Now let me blow your mind from where it all comes from…. Would you ever guess that beautiful dress is from ROSS?!! I think I paid $13 for it! My leopard heels are some cheap (and uncomfortable) heels from Wet Seal that I’ve had for years. The pill box hat is from Hot topic, and the lace gloves are actual vintage pieces that were gifted to me. The nude fence net stockings are essential for pin ups, and I found these for $1 at a costume shop in Hollywood. All the jewelry is costume jewelry that I’ve collected over the years. All this plus red lips, faux lashes, and a smashing photographer and viola! Pin up style baby!

Stylin’.

Last Saturday I went to an all day pin up shoot at Nick Boswell photography in Pasadena. It was a grand time. About 20-25 girls, 6 or so photographers and a whole lotta costuming going on. Some of the time I couldn’t tell if I was actually in a photography studio or a major studio costume department.

I knew in advance that some of the girls wanted help with hair, makeup and overall styling so I took the opportunity to lend a helping hand and packed up  my beautifying arsenal of weapons.

As soon as I arrived I went to work on a few of the girls hair and makeup. I am not very experienced at making up other women, because I normally just do me. This was good practice for me, but also there was no room for messing up, because they were going to be photographed. I did my best and the girls appreciated it. Although they were thankful for my help, it truly was my pleasure and even beneficial for me to get practice.

A few of the lovely girls I got to practice on. If there is one thing I’ve learned to appreciate more after this day, it’s the art of liquid eyeliner!

Luckily, I was able to get behind the camera a few times myself in a few different looks. Because the day was so fast and overwhelming, taking my own pictures (with my cam) was not on my mind. And as I sit here and type this up, I am regretful I didn’t get more photos of all the action.

Old Hollywood Glamour.

Headed out for a night in North Hollywood and I  was feeling a vintage glamour look for the night.

I absolutely adore fascinator head pieces and take advantage of any opportunity to wear them. Nowadays you don’t see many fascinators, unless of course your looking at photos from a British wedding or analyzing the fashion from the Kentucky Derby.

Fascinators are one of the most glamorous, feminine and beautiful accessories a woman can wear.

 

The main part of this fascinator is on the other side, and the netting comes over my pompadour. Unfortunately I didn’t really capture this look as well as I would have liked. I’m still at a loss for capturing “night” outfits at night, because I haven’t figured out lighting yet.

 

 

 

 

I basically wore all black, but mixed in different textures. My top was lace, the skirt was ruched and I wore a high waisted wide belt. I finally got to wear my AMAZINGLY gorgeous ruched vintage gloves that I’ve had for so long. I actually scored two pairs of these beauties, one in beige and this pair in plum.

On my feet are an absolutely stunning pair of Jeffrey Campbells. This shoe is called Corleone and they are heel less. (Sadly I didn’t get a side view…. next time!)

This outfit would great on any body type, from big to small. Empire waistlines and ruched fabrics are totally the way to go when you have curves! This outfit made me feel like old Hollywood glamour at its finest and I had a blast with it. Hopefully I can re-create this look sometime for better photos!

A Spot of Tea, Gov’na?

And by tea… I mean pure, hard liquor. ;)

Let me start by saying this outfit was created around the shoes. My new Jeffrey Campbells. I’ve been creating a lot of outfits lately with gold accessories, and yet I didn’t have the shoes to match, so I’ve been on the hunt for some edgy Jeff Campbells with gold hardware instead of silver. As you may or may not know… JC shoes are rather expensive and these particular shoes I’ve had my eyes on for a while and were originally almost $300. Yikes!!! I checked online a few days ago and what do you know… they are on sale for $185. They were practically screaming at me to buy them. And I was going to buy them, oh yes…. I was going to buy them! Just before I clicked the “commit to buy” button, a thought popped into my head.

Check Craigslist.

First of all, I am a HUGE fan of Craigslist. Craigslist has brought me SO much good in my life and zero bad. Many people are hesitant to use the site because some idiot murderer had to go ruin it for all of us CL fans. I personally have used the site well over 100 times to buy, sell, meet and greet.

So on this merry day, I searched “Jeffrey Campbell shoes” on Craigslist in the Los Angeles area. What do you know… a girl is selling the EXACT shoes I want, in MY size…. AND!!!!!! She lives in Long Beach. It was truly meant to be. She sold me these babies BRAND NEW, still wrapped in the box for $120!!!!! Whaaaaaat?!?!?!? I KNOW! Thank YOU Craigslist!!! Here they are, in all their shiny, metallic, spiked glory:

You’re probably thinking either of two thoughts:

a) WOW! Those are crazy or b) Doesn’t she already have shoes like that?

Yes and yes. They are pretty wild… and sharp, and I do have similar style JC shoes… however the ultimate difference is the gold hardware. One of my fashion rules (and many other fashionistas) is that you simply cannot mix metals. You can’t have a bunch of silver jewelery on, with gold heels. Or vice versa. Pick a metal, and stick to it. Hence why I wanted to add some gold hardware shoes to my wardrobe. You get it.

The blazer is from Ross, $20. The bag is by Big Buddha which I scored for wholesale cost ($36) since I interned for the company. The Union Jack tank I’m wearing is by Forever 21, however I found it at a tiny little sample/factory sale store in downtown LA and paid $5 for it. The lovely little gold circle pins on my blazer are all vintage pieces that I picked up at a flea market in San Francisco.

Meeting with the Gov’na to grab a spot of “tea” at my local piano bar. ;)

It’s that time of year…

August is a special month for me. It is a month where creativity explodes and styling is put into over time. The more creative and avant garde, the better! August is the month when I make my annual trip to the middle of the Black Rock Desert in Northern Nevada for the Burning Man festival. Burning Man in short, is a massive art festival/ social experiment in the middle of the barren desert that focuses on self reliance and self expression. The festival showcases all things extreme… the art, the people, the FASHION! No dress code, no rules, the fashion is created from the creative minds of the participants and their passions.

You can truly wear WHATEVER your heart desires in a judgement free zone. Judgement is out the door in a place where everyone looks so different and there is no “norm.” If you feel comfortable and happy wearing a potato sack, a ball gown or a speedo and a cape, then you are encouraged to do what YOU want to do and wear what YOU want to wear. Black Rock City is a society filled with citizens and participants wearing what they want to wear and not having to conform to social norms and rules of socially acceptable fashion.

I have a particular love for burlesque fashion and retro pin up styling. Burning Man allows me to take my love of burlesque costuming and be able to strut my stuff in it, all day and all night. Dressing in burlesque makes me feel good. I feel sexy, I feel beautiful, and all around I just feel so womanly. I can’t exactly throw on a pair of fishnets, booty shorts and a corset and go to class in it, in the default world. Thus, my love for a more “costumey” wardrobe flourishes this time of year.

We had a “red night” in my camp this past year so I took the opportunity to break out my fabulous red satin corset and pull it all together for probably one of my best burn outfits yet!

My devil horned fascinator was a gift I received from my friend Candace for my birthday and the corset I found on eBay. In fact, I think 75% of my ensemble came from eBay from my dreads… to my boots!

The corset is a cheapy, made with plastic boning, so it has lost a lot of its shape over time, however a cheap corset is the way to go when you’re taking it to the harsh, dusty elements of the Black Rock desert! The “bustle” on my bottom is merely a yard of red sparkly fabric that I just safety pinned to the back of my ruffled booty shorts.

And let me just tell you about these boots. These AMAZING boots have made it to the playa THREE times (heading for a forth in a few weeks!) and been on my feet to countless clubs, festivals, dance parties and social day events. I found these beauties on eBay years ago for a mere twenty bucks and they were brand new!!! Yes that’s right, $20!!!! They are branded Hot Topic, and these boots were easily $80 in the store. I absolutely LOVE these boots and would easily name them the greatest pair of boots I have ever owned, which is difficult to say, due to a lot of really cool boots in my life. I love these boots SO much, that I went on another search for a back up pair. After only a few months of looking, sure enough I came across another pair on eBay, brand new and in my exact size. I paid a little more for the second pair at around 50, but sooo sooooooo worth it! I haven’t unwrapped them from their tissue paper housings yet. They just sit in a box in my closet waiting for their day to take on a lead role in my life: Rebecca’s bad ass, all terrain, ground stomping, ass kicking, platform boots.

Two of my camp mates looking equally as impressive in their black and red ensembles. This photo really captures the beauty and fun of fashion at Burning Man. We all have very different looks and styles, yet we all fit one theme and look incredible! Everyone in the whole camp looked so awesome on our “red night.”

This outfit was hands down one of the funnest ensembles I’ve thrown together at the Burn. I felt it truly matched my personality with it’s glitzy glamor, the feminine sex appeal and with that touch of “edgy, bad girl.” If I could dress to my personality regularly, you’d see a lot of this look. I’m definitely going to shoot for more burlesque styling at the upcoming burn since I enjoyed it so much last year. On an end note, red is totally my color.
