Color Pop!

Creating a black and white outfit calls for a pop of color somewhere…. what better accessory than a cute, bright red wig?

Blue contrasts with red really well, so I added just a tad of blue eyeshadow under my eye for a lovely little detail. Again this outfit was relatively inexpensive.

Scarf: Hot Topic

An Outfit with Edge!

If you are regularly following and reading my blog, then you must know by now… my style has a lot of “edge” to it. Sure, I can do the feminine, girly, frilly thing and it is fun (sometimes). But for the most part, I love to incorporate studs, black, leather, spikes, lace and unique jewelry to create an edgy appeal.

On this day I chose to re-create an entirely different look with my gorgeous burn-out velvet kimono featured in a previous post.

By simply pairing the kimono with all black and silver accents I’ve created a look with a lot of sass, punk, glam and edge!

Easy outfit made up of black skinnies, a black tank, and the kimono. As always, an outfit is never complete without at least two accessories. Think rings, bracelets, necklaces, earrings, headbands, hair clips, etc. ALWAYS accessorize to complete the look!

Feather earrings: Beth Nouveau

Bag: Big Buddha

Shoes: Jeffrey Campbell

Kimono: eBay

Playa Fashion.

For starters, I don’t mean “playa” as in a guy who dates a bunch of women, but I DO mean “playa” as in Spanish for “beach.” All year long I prepare and get excited to go home to the Black Rock Desert for Burning Man. The Burning Man festival is held on an ancient dried lake bed, therefore this particular desert is known as a “playa.” Now that that is covered… on the playa we love our fashion endeavors. Some go for silly, some go for sexy, some go for WOW and some go for nothing (aka their birthday suit!)

Here are some of my other fun fashion ensembles on the playa:

A handkerchief and goggles are essential on the playa due to copious amounts of DUST in the air at all times. You never know when the winds will pick up and send a white out dust storm over the city. If you are caught without goggles and a dust mask, you are pretty much screwed. In this last photo, it was early sunrise and it was wicked cold out, so I used my handkerchief to keep my face warm.

I’ve been lagging on my posts recently due to heavy crafting and creating this year’s fashion. I’ve spent hours upon hours putting work into next week’s garb, so hopefully I’ll get some awesome photos out there to show for it. I most likely won’t have any posts for about two weeks, since I am leaving on Sunday for this year’s festival and as soon as I come back, I am immediately back to school. Busy busy! Stay tuned in the future for some awesome pics from Burning Man 2012, my 4th year!

Make it up with make up.

Feeling a little tribal on this night. I often build a look around a set of colors, an accessory or a single article of clothing. On this night my green, purple, black and white feather earrings that I bought from Beth Nouveau on Etsy took over my look.

Using green, purple, and a shimmery tan I painted my lids. The tribal dots are simply done with eyeliner and a steady hand. If anyone knows of a better make up for tribal paint jobs, please do share. After the shadows were on, I used loose purple glitter to go over the purple shadow for some sparkle! To apply loose glitter I’ve found this amazing product by Hard Candy, which you can find at Walmart:

Best glitter glue, EVER. Just make sure you’re using glitter specially made to be worn as make up, and not craft glitter! I love glitter and this product makes it soooo easy to wear.

This make up look is fun, different and definitely stands out in a crowd. And if anyone looks at you and says “why?” Well then you say, “It’s called STYLE, baby.”

Thank YOU for reading. <3

Goth’s not dead.

Although I am not an avid follower of the “goth scene” I do love gothic fashion. There certainly is a difference between “high school” gothic fashion, and elegant, more mature gothic styling. That means leaving those extremely riveted, faded black bondage pants in the attic. Naturally, the color palette of any gothic ensemble will mainly be blacks, grays, whites and reds; all lovely colors to build an outfit with.

These photos are from a casual day out to lunch with a friend of mine. He busted out his iPhone, and we went on a photo taking spree.

These pants are black on black leopard print I found at Ross for 10 bucks. The jacket is plain black with faux fur around the collar and wrists and has a zipper front closure, with a belt that wraps around as well, $25 on clearance from Hot Topic. Add in a few silver funky accessories and some hot platform boots, and the outfit is complete! Oh yes, and red lips. Always red lips.

You just can’t go wrong with all black, leather and fur. ;)

Introduction to the Fashion Industry.

So I’ve been taking this class, Intro to the Fashion Industry at Long Beach State University, and I absolutely love it! We’ve had a few projects to belt out over the semester and I wanted to share.

Our first project display was based on a local designer of our choice. While the majority of the class presented on typical preppy, or mainstream fashion… I wanted to break the mold (as usual) and present a designer that would entertain, and wake them up from their naps. I chose to highlight a local milliner (a hat maker) named Sylva Scar Hattington who has an Etsy shop under the name Bubbles & Frown (click here to see her shop!) She makes these amazingly extravagant feather head dresses and other hats of all sorts, shapes, textures and colors.

Here is my display:

Of course, I got an A.

Our second project was far more in depth. We had to create a concept for a retail store and explain the target market, customer demographics, the price points, the merchandise, etc. I created “Hot Couture” which would be boutique style and similar to Urban Outfitters, in the sense that it would have clothes, accessories, gifts, and knick knacks for the home. What makes Hot Couture unique, is all product inside (and the store itself) would be all in the gothic style. Not obnoxious junior high goth, but elegant, classy and mature gothic style. Think black lacquered crown moldings, chic feather accessories and overall darker, high fashion elements. Perhaps a little something like this:

Here is my customer demographic:

“The Hot Couture client is a confident, bold woman. She is a woman who knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to express herself through art, fashion and style. She is most likely single; however the Hot Couture caters to ANY woman, young or old, kids or no kids, so long as she has a taste for Hot Couture’s style. She will have a darker side to her personality, where she finds extreme beauty in darker fashion elements such as rich velvets, blood red roses, skulls, dripping candle wax and the color black. Our client loves the night life and will never step out on a Saturday night in nothing less than an exquisite, gothic inspired, high fashion look from head to toe. Her daring garb and her seemingly effortless beauty make her the main attraction in any night life atmosphere. When our client steps into a room with Hot Couture’s apparel, everyone turns to gaze upon her.

Once she is done entertaining herself, it is time for her to entertain others. This is where our client will stop by Hot Couture every few weeks to pick up a new set of wine glasses or a black crystal chandelier for her dining room. Her living space will be enriched with lovely gothic elements and rich fabrics. With Hot Couture’s help, our client will have black and gray candles on the mantle; large, ornate black lacquered frames will encase black and white photos on her walls and there will be a rich velvety throw tossed over the arm of her sofa. She may even have Hot Couture’s latest plush, satin cat bed for her feline friend to relax in. Her living space will definitely match her refined darker style and Hot Couture will make it easy for her.”

Hmmmm…. sound like anyone you know? ;)

And my project display (which I spent a solid 5 hour block of time on):

After seeing the entire class present, it was obvious I spent the most time and effort on my display. I was VERY proud to show this off when it came to my turn, having seen mostly mediocre projects beforehand. I knew all those years of intense scrapbooking would pay off!

The semester is coming to an end and I surely earned a high A in this class.

Inspirations.

Hi! I’m Rebecca! Welcome back.

To start this blog off right, I’d like to discuss exactly where my unique taste for style has spawned from. Over the course of my few decades of life I’ve been drawn to a wide array of “styles.” My personal style and inspirations are born from a melting pot of different looks.

Punk, glam, goth, pin-ups, and almost every decade from the 20th century.

Well… not the 90′s… certainly NOT the 90′s. The only people that draw their fashion from the 90′s are those damned bearded, flannel wearing, fixie riding, chai tea drinking, art gallery visiting hipsters!

The only great things from the 90′s were Power Rangers and TLC.

So, as I was saying… a melting pot of style. That’s me. I love to take pretty much any “genre” of fashion and add a glam touch to it. Punk glam, hippie glam, goth glam, retro glam,

glam glam GLAM!

What lovely ladies inspire me? Well none other than the amazing Gwen Stefani of course. And I cannot forget classic beauty and glamour icons such as Jayne Mansfield, Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe. Such class. Such beauty.

I suppose I have a thing for platinum blonde.

It’s a great thing to not conform to only one style. I love dressing to my moods, my attitudes and the weather. If I want to be ultra feminine and girly, so be it. Do I want to kick some ass and wear my platform boots and leather belts? Or do I feel like wandering through a field of flowers in hippie garb? Whatever it may be, my style comes from a melting pot indeed.

A glamorous melting pot. ;)
