Festive in February!

February is sort of a drab month for me. I never felt too great about the month you know? January is cool because everyone’s all excited about a new year, new changes, and wonder what adventures await them. Then February rolls around and you stop going to the gym, the excitement fades and  the reality sinks in that it’s just another year. But on the bright side, February does offer up Pisces (Love all you Pisces out there!) and two fun, festive holidays: Mardi Gras and Valentine’s Day!

This was my look for last year’s Mardi Gras (2012)… I didn’t celebrate, I just did this for work. Hair picks from Antickquities.

Below is my look for last year’s Valentine’s Day as well. Again, this look was for going to work and being festive.

I didn’t get many pictures from this year’s Valentine’s day, however after spending a nice chunk of time on my hair, I had to capture this:

Gotta love that pin up look for lover’s day! I’ve received many requests on doing a hair swirl/pompadour tutorial and I’ve actually made attempts at this project, but it has yet to be perfected. Maybe some day…

As for Mardi Gras this year, I went all out. I was going to be volunteering at a booth from an on campus club I recently joined, the Student Communication Association. Our club was amongst a plethora of clubs offering Mardi Gras related activities, club information and general recruitment.

I made my top hat last year and never got an opportunity to wear it, so I styled my Mardi Gras outfit all around my hat. This hat took me over 7 hours of hand gluing Swarovski crystals and it needed to shine!

The night before I constructed the feather and beaded epaulette on my right shoulder, and my vintage gold sequined skirt and Jeffrey Campbell Damsel’s completed the look! Head to toe festive and FABULOUS!

My friend April joined the party also dressed head to toe in fabulous festive Mardi Gras garb, with her own personal flair. We were definitely the best dressed on campus that day, and we rocked our ensembles throughout the entire day.

Wedding Guest Glamour!

What better place to GLAM IT UP than a wedding?! Not all of us get to float over red carpets or enjoy the races, so why not get dolled to the nines for a wedding?

I was recently lucky enough to acquire an insanely gorgeous Arturo Rios masterpiece of a hat.

My new art piece to add to my collection.

Arturo Rios is a Los Angeles based couture hat designer, specializing in avant garde fascinators and high fashion head wear. You can find these and many other styles on his Etsy shop (as well as specialty boutiques and his website.)

Naturally I had to wear this amazing hat to a December wedding I was to attend. I had the perfect little red dress to pair it with.

My shoes are the lovely Corleone’s by Jeffrey Campbell and my beaded clutch is from Big Buddha. Luckily I had my gorgeous vintage fox fur to drape over my shoulders, and my sweet little black hand gloves for the perfect touch. What I find amusing, is the dress I’m wearing was the least expensive item of everything I have on! I got this dress for $8 at a small overstock/ sample shop in downtown LA’s garment district.

This look is certainly not for the shy personality, but it was a lot of fun to pull off and I felt like a glamorous princess all day! The wedding was fabulous, and despite no heel on my shoe, I danced all night long! ;)

My Favorite Holiday, NYE!

Hands down, New Year’s Eve is my favorite holiday of them all. The last 5 years I have been lucky enough to have outrageous, awesome, incredible, and fun New Year’s Eve celebrations. What better day in the whole year to wipe away any hard times from the previous months and to be hopeful and optimistic about the next yearly chapter?

My favorite holiday paired with my favorite hobby naturally calls for an outstanding outfit. I’m blessed to have many friends that love dressing up as much as I do, and I get the opportunity to attend themed parties. Themed parties seriously are THE BEST. Sure, regular parties are cool and all…. but slap on a theme, and the party sky rockets to a whole new level of awesomeness.

This year’s NYE party was themed: White Russian. The theme can go many different ways, however I made it simple and kept it Russian and the color white.

My cat Mikah is my assistant creative director when it comes to outfit planning.

The one sewing class I took in high school taught me how to sew a pillow and an apron. Naturally, these days I can’t even set up a sewing machine, let alone use it. On top of that, I don’t even have a sewing machine! Sewing would be an amazing skill to have (especially for someone who loves fashion) but for now I have to stick to hand stitching with just a needle and thread.

I headed to the Garment district in downtown LA and purchased one yard of this pretty white faux fur fabric for $14. With this one yard, I was able to create my Russian fur hat, my furry boot cover/leg warmers and even made some arm cuffs out of the fur as well. Considering the quickly applied hand stitch to bring it all together, I thought surely the articles of fur would be in pieces by the end of the night, but surprisingly, it all stayed together.

My skirt and top are from (take a wild guess…) ROSS!!! When I paired them together, they sort of blended to look like a ruffly dress. I actually had all the pieces of my outfit already in my wardrobe except for the furry pieces, so it was awesome that I only ended up spending $14 for the whole outfit.

I opted for a firey red wig instead of my platinum blonde for some nice contrast against the white. Plus, I’m sure there are a lot of hot Russian red heads out there. ;)

The outfit was a success and the party was amazing.

Here are a few shots from a photobooth set up at the party:

Holidays: Perfect time to turn up the glam!

Hair for the holidays!

Ahhh yes the holiday season, a time where adding flair to a work uniform or outfit comes easy. These snowflake earrings I’ve had for years and the I love them because they are not gawdy holiday jewelry… They are simple, clean and have little rhinestones all over them. I found them at the Icing years ago, and I still get a lot of compliments on them every holiday season. The clear strands with pearls on them are actually wedding floral arrangement decor I found at Michaels.

They are really inexpensive and I just cut off a few strands and tuck them into my hair like a head band. I use bobby pins if needed. The gorgeous poinsettia in my hair was also purchased at a craft store. A bunch of them for a couple bucks, a fantastic way to add some holiday flair for the budget conscience!

Head to your local craft shop and find your favorite flowers or holiday inspired pieces (holly berries, candy canes, ribbons, snowflakes, etc.) and then throw your hair into a ponytail or bun, and you can easily stick them in the side or bobby pin them in.

One of these pieces in the above left photo is actually just a decorative bow for wrapping presents. I just strategically jammed a bobby pin through it and voila, a great hair piece to add to some red and white flowers.

Nothing prettier than a bold, red poinsettia in a girl’s hair!

Holiday Party Style Inspiration

Ladies, it’s that time of year when dressing for a party becomes much more fun! Any other time of the year, really anything goes for party… but the holidays calls for a specific color palette and festive accessories!

Using Polyvore, I created some style sets to help with some holiday party inspiration!

Set I:

With this color combination you are SURE to have all eyes on you when you enter the room. The black and gold add touches of elegance and style while a bold red dress says confidence! (And confidence is very appealing!)

Set II:

If dresses aren’t your thing, but you still want to look ultra fabulous, then something like this is perfect! Printed pants are super stylish right now and how can you not love the metallic gold on black floral motif? Add a sleek black blazer and some bold accessories and you are perfectly suited for your holiday party.

Set III:

This look combines a little more festive spirit with a cute, holiday inspired mini top hat. If you’re going to a holiday party, might as well go all out and get in the spirit with at least one holiday inspired accessory! Don’t just look good, look the BEST! Even if you just attach some red poinsettia’s or holly berries (from a craft store) to your outfit in some way, it adds so much more to your attire.

Set IV:

I can’t forget all the women out there who prefer a men’s style of dress. (AKA all the lesbians!) Hahahaha. Seriously though, this look is stylish and festive for any woman that prefers menswear. Whether you like a bow tie or neck tie, this look is going to be fantastic either way. Having a festive holiday sock peeking out every now and then is the icing on the cake.

Hopefully these style sets get your own creative juices flowing and I’d LOVE to see any holiday looks you create this season! Send me your best holiday outfits or looks through Facebook!

Cheers everyone!

Color Pop!

Creating a black and white outfit calls for a pop of color somewhere…. what better accessory than a cute, bright red wig?

Blue contrasts with red really well, so I added just a tad of blue eyeshadow under my eye for a lovely little detail. Again this outfit was relatively inexpensive.

Sweater dress: Say What? (from Kohls!)

Scarf: Hot Topic

Skirt, Boots and Hat: Ross

Bag and Sunglasses: Big Buddha

Unique Antique.

I am currently taking an argumentation and debate class at CSU Long Beach. For some reason our professor thought the absolute best topic to debate ALL semester is about the government funding NASA and private companies to mine asteroids. Yes, you read that correctly.

I had never even heard about this until we had to start researching the matter. Low and behold it’s an actual proposition NASA and the private sector have been working towards. I won’t bore you with the details, but apparently asteroids have trillions of dollars worth of rare minerals such as platinum and gold and our nation wants to go into space, land Armageddon style on an asteroid and devour the expensive contents.

ANYWAY… my first round of debates, I was representing NASA and luckily for me I happen to own an antique NASA pilot pin! For the debate I dressed in navy blue and affixed my little NASA pin to the ruffle of my dress for the perfect visual during my debate.

This cute dress I found at a thrift store for less than five dollars.

This pin is an AWESOME find that I picked up at a military antique trade show a few years back. It is an actual NASA pilot’s pin and I’ve never had the opportunity to wear it functionally. When I took to the podium for my debate, I adjusted the pin on my ruffle (to point it out to the class) and began to speak. A few muffled giggles turned into the entire class (including my professor) laughing at the clever placement of my perfect fashion accessory. My serious demeanor cracked a smile as I entered into my speech.

Of course my partner and I annihilated the other team and won the debate. I like to think my little pin helped.
