Festive in February!

February is sort of a drab month for me. I never felt too great about the month you know? January is cool because everyone’s all excited about a new year, new changes, and wonder what adventures await them. Then February rolls around and you stop going to the gym, the excitement fades and  the reality sinks in that it’s just another year. But on the bright side, February does offer up Pisces (Love all you Pisces out there!) and two fun, festive holidays: Mardi Gras and Valentine’s Day!

This was my look for last year’s Mardi Gras (2012)… I didn’t celebrate, I just did this for work. Hair picks from Antickquities.

Below is my look for last year’s Valentine’s Day as well. Again, this look was for going to work and being festive.

I didn’t get many pictures from this year’s Valentine’s day, however after spending a nice chunk of time on my hair, I had to capture this:

Gotta love that pin up look for lover’s day! I’ve received many requests on doing a hair swirl/pompadour tutorial and I’ve actually made attempts at this project, but it has yet to be perfected. Maybe some day…

As for Mardi Gras this year, I went all out. I was going to be volunteering at a booth from an on campus club I recently joined, the Student Communication Association. Our club was amongst a plethora of clubs offering Mardi Gras related activities, club information and general recruitment.

I made my top hat last year and never got an opportunity to wear it, so I styled my Mardi Gras outfit all around my hat. This hat took me over 7 hours of hand gluing Swarovski crystals and it needed to shine!

The night before I constructed the feather and beaded epaulette on my right shoulder, and my vintage gold sequined skirt and Jeffrey Campbell Damsel’s completed the look! Head to toe festive and FABULOUS!

My friend April joined the party also dressed head to toe in fabulous festive Mardi Gras garb, with her own personal flair. We were definitely the best dressed on campus that day, and we rocked our ensembles throughout the entire day.

Cold Weather in California?

Although it rarely happens, it DOES get cold in Southern California… Of course my version of cold is any temp below 60 (then again, I am desert native.) This winter we’ve definitely had some bouts of COLD cold! But you know what that means? Time for layers and one of my favorite accessories… scarves!!!!

Black, white, hot pink OH MY! Love these colors together! A scarf is an easy way to make a colorless, boring outfit fun and bold!

This outfit came together with the help of my all my favorite places to shop… mainly Ross and sample sales!!! The gorgeous coat I’m wearing is from an Abbott & Main sample sale and I scored it for a mere $35!!! The material is incredible soft and the details on the coat are endless. Truly an amazing find!

On my ankle is a unique piece of jewelry I found at a small boutique in L.A. It is meant to be worn over your shoes and works like a basic anklet. This scarf I found in the lost and found at my job, and so after it had been there a while, I took it home, washed it and made it my own.

Although I prefer the heat, ain’t nothin wrong with a few weeks of cold weather to allow my coats and scarves to get a work out!

Being on the Wheel of Fortune!

I can now say I have lived an American dream. Not only did I accomplish being a contestant on Wheel, but 5 years ago I also conquered Price Is Right (with Bob Barker, so it’s legit.) On Price Is Right I had the winning bet on a huge collection of children’s books (which are now the perfect gift EVERY holiday for my niece and nephew.) I got up on stage to play the dice game to win a Ford Mustang and failed miserably. Even when I spun the wheel I failed miserably. Although I lost big time, it was still a really fun, unique experience. I never thought I’d make it onto another game show… but then…..

The year was 2011. I was walking to my morning class at beautiful California State University Long Beach when I saw the huge painted banner that read: Wheel of Fortune auditions today! I thought to myself, ” If they came to ME, it is meant to be that I go audition.”

I didn’t know any of the 200 or so students auditioning in the auditorium. Most everyone was with their group of friends or a single buddy. And there I was alone, knowing that I had to make myself memorable if I wanted to get on the show. I was disappointed to see so many people not taking the audition seriously. They lacked volume, or personality or literally had nothing to say. I kept telling myself, “I’m in it to win it! I will do what it takes to make it on the show.” And that I did. I gave them all the personality, all the volume, all the enthusiasm and all the wild antics a game show could ever want. Of course, in the audience all I could hear were crickets chirping after each and every one of my antics, and it was a bit uncomfortable being so over the top, knowing I didn’t have any friendly support. But I did it. And then a few weeks later I got letter in the mail inviting me to a second audition over in Culver City.

I nailed that audition as well. From my perspective it’s easy to get on the show. They tell you exactly what they want from you (volume, speak clearly, be fun, be enthusiastic) and all you have to do is deliver it. You do all that and the chances of getting on are pretty good. Low and behold a couple weeks later I got the call, announcing that I was picked to be on the show at some point within a year.

Fast forward almost an entire year later and my show is finally scheduled for sometime in the early December of 2012. They film 6 shows in a day, so there is about 20 of us contestants there for one day of filming. It’s a lot of fun, you meet cool people and there is an overwhelming sense of excitement blanketing you up until it’s all over. I figured since I lost so bad on Price Is Right, that Wheel was my redemption game show.

I played my show with Beau and Kristy and it’s incredible how fast the show tapes and it truly was all a blur. One minute I was introducing myself, excitement overload on the possible chance of me walking away with thousands and the next minute I was being ushered away, having not solved a singe puzzle or banked any amount at all. I was CRUSHED. To put into perspective, let me remind you that I knew I’d be on the show for an entire year. That means for one year, I dreamed about being on the show. I dreamed about winning big (as anybody would), dreamed about possible trips I could have won, or what I might do with a few extra dollars in my bank account. I knew I was good at the game, so I imagined that I would do well.

But there I was at the end of the game, with nothing. I was given the “thanks for being here prize” of $1000 (less after taxes), which is awesome, but mind you I didn’t earn it. I didn’t bank it, I didn’t solve anything for it. I FAILED!!!! Granted, the wheel was not very nice to me and Beau took the show by storm, but I was simply crushed to have not accomplished or solved anything on the show.

To further singe the burn, Miss Kristy who banked 3,300 dollars was an absolute POOR SPORT on the show and even after. Once we were ushered off, she had the biggest scowl on her face and the grumpiest tone in her voice. I remained positive and cheerful (I didn’t want to be a jerk, even though I was disappointed with the outcome.) I asked her, “What’s the matter?” And she just grunted at me… “hhrrmphh.” My blood began to simmer. I then cheerfully said, “Kristy, you just won 3,300 dollars and solved a puzzle!” And her reaction was a continuous scowl and a verbal response of, “Yeah, whatever…” My blood began to BOIL. I could not believe this woman was so angry about winning (actually winning it herself) $3,300!!!!! Yeah, so she didn’t win the show, at least she’s going home with 3,300 dollars! I was like, “Kristy, you won a lot more than I did, and at least you got to solve a puzzle… I didn’t accomplish much.” And still… a scowl and angry grunt.

Uuuughghhhhhhghhghghhhhhh!!!!

I was infuriated with this woman. I couldn’t believe how she dared to behave that way in front of me. I was deeply disappointed with my outcome on the show (as anyone would have been,) however I kept my spirit up and was thankful, and appreciative of the opportunity and made sure to keep that smile plastered on my face up until I left the studio.

If Kristy wanted to be disappointed, I’m totally okay with that… be upset all you want. Everyone is entitled to their own feelings. HOWEVER be upset and grumpy on your OWN time, AWAY from other contestants who didn’t do so well and AWAY from the production crew who gave you the opportunity. It’s called class.

Took me a few days to process everything that had happened and the next thing to do was wait until it aired to experience the excitement and trauma all over again. Hahaha.

My episode aired on January 24th and it was an absolute blast to watch. My social networks (Instagram, FB, etc.) began jumping off the charts once the episode aired on the East coast. Thanks to the mention of my blog on the show, the traffic was so high on my site, that it actually crashed for a short time; every blogger’s dream.  My blog got a record number of almost 6,000 hits the night my episode aired and I gained a lot of new followers through my various social networks. I never ever thought I’d get as much feedback as I did. People from all over wrote to me with well wishes, support and admiration for my style (and hair, LOL). It was SO AWESOME. My friends were all super happy for me and sent me messages that just put huge smiles on my face.

Even though I didn’t win big money, I won an incredible experience that will hopefully open doors for me in the future and who knows, maybe even help me land a job where I can then earn some big money!

Never Again 90′s.

When you look at past decades of women’s fashion all the way to the beginning of the 1900′s it’s hard to not love what you see. Frilly ruffles, soft materials, delicate beaded gloves, feathered hats, bold shoes and a shocking variety of hems and waistlines.

Fashion through the decades. 1910′s to 1980′s.

During the late 60′s and 70′s is when fashion trends started to venture off the beaten path, however most of the trends ( platform shoes, high waisted pants, and bold prints for example) were and still remain highly fashionable.

Then the 80′s happened. What happened in the 1980′s, I don’t know but fashion took a running dive off the deep end and so the fashion of the 1990′s turned into the dead, decaying, awful bloated corpse of 80′s fashion. Yes the 80′s was bad… but the 90′s? It’s like fashion wasn’t even trying.

Not. Even. Trying.

The worst part about it all? We are about to experience a full fledged 90′s fashion re-run as the pitiful decade of “fashion” comes back into style. I’ve seen 90′s trends creeping around in the shadows for a few years now (stomaching the vomit every time), but lately it’s creeping into the spotlight and I cannot figure out, why oh why are people finding this attractive? The 90′s was BY FAR the WORST decade of fashion EVER!!! I thought this was mutually agreed upon by everyone who can see, but apparently there is an entire breed of fashionista’s who think they’re doing something revolutionary by wearing an over-sized acid washed denim jacket with Aztec trim and smells like an old rabbit cage.

Big yellow smiley faces, over-sized flannel, body suits, paint splattered everything, nasty bungeed denim, OVERALLS and yin yangs are back; and people are actually buying it! Hopefully after a year or so people will realize their dire mistakes of reviving 90′s fashion and send it all back to where it came from… the 25 cent bin at the thrift store.

I know all the little 90′s fashion loving hipsters are crying right now…. “But… but… it’s VINTAGE!” Vintage it may be (in about another decade) HOWEVER, vintage or not, 90′s fashion is just plain ugg! Just because they wore it on Saved By the Bell and the Cosby show, doesn’t make it cute NOW.

Fashion from the 90′s decade should be locked into a box and mailed to NEVER AGAIN.

My Favorite Holiday, NYE!

Hands down, New Year’s Eve is my favorite holiday of them all. The last 5 years I have been lucky enough to have outrageous, awesome, incredible, and fun New Year’s Eve celebrations. What better day in the whole year to wipe away any hard times from the previous months and to be hopeful and optimistic about the next yearly chapter?

My favorite holiday paired with my favorite hobby naturally calls for an outstanding outfit. I’m blessed to have many friends that love dressing up as much as I do, and I get the opportunity to attend themed parties. Themed parties seriously are THE BEST. Sure, regular parties are cool and all…. but slap on a theme, and the party sky rockets to a whole new level of awesomeness.

This year’s NYE party was themed: White Russian. The theme can go many different ways, however I made it simple and kept it Russian and the color white.

My cat Mikah is my assistant creative director when it comes to outfit planning.

The one sewing class I took in high school taught me how to sew a pillow and an apron. Naturally, these days I can’t even set up a sewing machine, let alone use it. On top of that, I don’t even have a sewing machine! Sewing would be an amazing skill to have (especially for someone who loves fashion) but for now I have to stick to hand stitching with just a needle and thread.

I headed to the Garment district in downtown LA and purchased one yard of this pretty white faux fur fabric for $14. With this one yard, I was able to create my Russian fur hat, my furry boot cover/leg warmers and even made some arm cuffs out of the fur as well. Considering the quickly applied hand stitch to bring it all together, I thought surely the articles of fur would be in pieces by the end of the night, but surprisingly, it all stayed together.

My skirt and top are from (take a wild guess…) ROSS!!! When I paired them together, they sort of blended to look like a ruffly dress. I actually had all the pieces of my outfit already in my wardrobe except for the furry pieces, so it was awesome that I only ended up spending $14 for the whole outfit.

I opted for a firey red wig instead of my platinum blonde for some nice contrast against the white. Plus, I’m sure there are a lot of hot Russian red heads out there. ;)

The outfit was a success and the party was amazing.

Here are a few shots from a photobooth set up at the party:

Off to the Theatre! (again)

The Book of Mormon recently played for a few months in Hollywood at the Pantages Theatre. I had heard so many good things about it, and saw that it was nominated for quite a few awards so I definitely had to see it.

For my girlfriend’s birthday, I scored us hot tickets to the show with fantastic seats! For my outfit, I ended up creating a look that mixed a classic vintage look, with some edge. If I could go back, I would have dropped the edge, and just kept it classy glam but what can you do, this is my look for the night:

One of my favrite beauty looks is platinum hair, dark eyebrows and red lips. I melt any time I see it, and love to pull it off myself. I know I know, a lot of people can’t stand dark eyebrows with light hair… but you know what I can’t stand? Bleached eyebrows!!!! What the heck is that?!

Where are her eyebrows?!??! Oh yeah!!! She BLEACHED them!!!

Moving on…

This gorgeous dress I scored at a sample sale in downtown LA for a mere 10 bucks. This dress retails for 90 dollars! The shoes are my fabulous Prickly’s by Jeffrey Campbell and of course my clutch is Big Buddha.

Loving the sleeve detail, and how the edges turn slightly upward.

After a lovely dinner at a nearby restaurant, we headed over to the gorgeous Pantages Theatre for the night’s show. Needless to say, the musical was fantastic and quite impressive with the actors, songs, and visual presentation. I especially loved the seemingly authentic African tribal costume and chant done in the “airport scene” towards the beginning.

Overall it was a fantastic show and the even the audience was great. My girlfriend and I had an amazing time and playing dress up beforehand was almost as fun as the musical itself.

Holiday Party Style Inspiration

Ladies, it’s that time of year when dressing for a party becomes much more fun! Any other time of the year, really anything goes for party… but the holidays calls for a specific color palette and festive accessories!

Using Polyvore, I created some style sets to help with some holiday party inspiration!

Set I:

With this color combination you are SURE to have all eyes on you when you enter the room. The black and gold add touches of elegance and style while a bold red dress says confidence! (And confidence is very appealing!)

Set II:

If dresses aren’t your thing, but you still want to look ultra fabulous, then something like this is perfect! Printed pants are super stylish right now and how can you not love the metallic gold on black floral motif? Add a sleek black blazer and some bold accessories and you are perfectly suited for your holiday party.

Set III:

This look combines a little more festive spirit with a cute, holiday inspired mini top hat. If you’re going to a holiday party, might as well go all out and get in the spirit with at least one holiday inspired accessory! Don’t just look good, look the BEST! Even if you just attach some red poinsettia’s or holly berries (from a craft store) to your outfit in some way, it adds so much more to your attire.

Set IV:

I can’t forget all the women out there who prefer a men’s style of dress. (AKA all the lesbians!) Hahahaha. Seriously though, this look is stylish and festive for any woman that prefers menswear. Whether you like a bow tie or neck tie, this look is going to be fantastic either way. Having a festive holiday sock peeking out every now and then is the icing on the cake.

Hopefully these style sets get your own creative juices flowing and I’d LOVE to see any holiday looks you create this season! Send me your best holiday outfits or looks through Facebook!

Cheers everyone!
