Punk Grunge Glamour

When I was in high school, I was soooooo punk rock. Also known as “a poser.” LOL. That’s just the way it goes. Along with going to local punk shows, being rebellious, wearing plaid and Doc Martens, came calling everyone else a poser. It’s quite funny actually.

Really I just enjoyed some classic & more modern punk music, and going to shows to let out some energy in a mosh-pit…  I very much enjoyed the punk style of plaids, leather, spikes, chains, patches, etc. I expressed myself through punk style during my last few years of school and then let it fade away. However I still love the style and I still love those same punk bands I loved years ago. Although I never got into the politics of the punk scene, it didn’t stop me from enjoying bands like the Ramones, Sex Pistols, the Buzzcocks, Dead Kennedys, Vice Squad, the Adicts, Rancid, Operation Ivy, and the Dropkick Murphys.

I was recently selling some clothes at Wasteland when I spotted what appeared to be a sweet ass vintage band t-shirt. I dropped everything I was doing to take a peek at this shirt that had just hit the sales floor…… A vintage Dead Kennedy’s t-shirt, AND it smelled good. SCORE! Not only do I adore the dark, eerie and rambunctious sound of the Dead Kennedy’s, but here I found a perfectly softened, old school vintage t-shirt with their political propaganda inked all over it.

Completing my grungy punk style is the same leather bondage belt I rocked about a decade ago, a subtle plaid print on my jeans and of course a flannel knotted around the waist. As you all know, I almost always have to add in some glamour to whatever style I’m rockin, so in comes the teased hair, the shiny accessories and my fringed bag. The diamond shaped bangle is by Vinca, an awesome jewelry company based here in the USA. It is such a cool bracelet, made of laser cut wood!

Glam Noir

A long time ago I found this gorgeous piece of wearable art on Etsy:

If you checked out the link, which takes you to the Etsy listing, you will see the jaw dropping price of almost $500. Wayyyy out my price range, but oh SO beautiful. I added the item to my favorites list and oohed and ahhed over it for years.

When it comes to shopping for unique pieces, my motto is “when in doubt… search eBay.” Some of my greatest finds have come from eBay, and always at a great price! Recently I was browsing eBay for an unrelated item, and stumbled across a beaded collar necklace that looked incredibly similar to the Etsy piece, and it was much more affordable, so I had a “treat yo self” moment.

My friend Sam and I got together to shoot the piece. I created the look, and she took the photos at her studio. My hair didn’t come out quite the way I hoped, but what can you do… once a half can of hairspray is in the hair… you’re not gonna make it look any other way.

Generally I don’t like to fit any particular mold of one specific style, and tend to draw creativity from multiple genres of fashion. My inspirations for this look pull from goth and glamour, basically what I like to call “glam noir.”

A big thanks to Sam for letting me test out her amazing photography and editing skills. You can see more of Sam’s work on her FB fanpage here.

We took a TON of photos, however I don’t have the mad editing skills Sam has, and so she was kind enough to send me these images for use. This last one is my favorite.

Not-So-Mellow Yellow.

Having a gloomy day? Why not brighten it up with a splash of yellow?! It’s an uplifting, and bold color that makes the wearer feel bright, cheery, and energetic! Every guy and gal deserves a little yellow in their closet.

I was recently scouring the clearance racks at everyone’s favorite superstore– Target! I was lucky enough to come across this simple, color blocked yellow skirt, on clearance for $8! I couldn’t pass it up! The material is lovely and the skirt is as comfortable as skirts get!

On  this day I was headed to a fashionable friend’s party, so I had to make sure my outfit was on point. After two hours of mixing, matching, and complete outfit changes, I arrived at this perfect combination of color and print.

Black and White, an Outfit for the Night.

The entire outfit was assembled around the headpiece, which I can proudly say I MADE!! Sparkly, sharp and extremely beautiful; it’s an accessory that flows with my personality like no other. As I stated on Instagram, I actually have one more of these pretty pieces which (someday) will be posted for sale. More details about the piece will come then.

Black and white is still a hot color combo for the season and pretty easy to put together. You can’t really screw up black and white ya know? I had been saving this peplum, houndstooth skirt for the perfect occasion, and it went great with this outfit. Garter tights are super trendy right now and hot hot hot, I suggest getting a pair NOW if you like the style. Just make sure to stay away from drunk Argentinian broads at bars who are likely to accidently burn a hole in your fabulous new stockings with their cigarette butts. (UGH!)

As usual I feel that every outfit is made by the accessories, so I had to pile them on. I like to sparkle so much when I enter a room, that people need sunglasses to look at me. 😉

Glitter, rhinestones, sequins, diamonds…. I love em all.

I loved this entire look (which I styled in about 25 minutes). The makeup, hair, clothes, shoes, and even nails worked together to create a visual symphony of a chic black and white ensemble that received quite a bit of positive attention out on the town. Ahhhhh, I love dress up.

Details on outfits often include where I found the item and its cost, because I think one of my specialties is dressing well on a low to middle income budget and still looking like a million bucks. It’s all about hunting for treasures and scoping out affordable places to shop such as sample sales, flea markets, thrift stores, etc. Spend less on clothes, and invest on shoes or accessories!

Fascinator: Rebecca Glam  (made by me)

Shirt: Velvet Heart (Found at a sample sale $10)

Skirt: Sensational Collection (found at Ross for $8)

Belt: TJ Maxx (for $6)

Garter tights: eBay (about $12)

Bag: Betsey Johnson (sample sale score for $20, bag retails around $200)

Shoes: Prickly, by Jeffrey Campbell (the only item I’m wearing that was expensive at $230, however you can find these shoes on sale currently for half the cost.)

Wedding Guest Glamour!

What better place to GLAM IT UP than a wedding?! Not all of us get to float over red carpets or enjoy the races, so why not get dolled to the nines for a wedding?

I was recently lucky enough to acquire an insanely gorgeous Arturo Rios masterpiece of a hat.

My new art piece to add to my collection.

Arturo Rios is a Los Angeles based couture hat designer, specializing in avant garde fascinators and high fashion head wear. You can find these and many other styles on his Etsy shop (as well as specialty boutiques and his website.)

Naturally I had to wear this amazing hat to a December wedding I was to attend. I had the perfect little red dress to pair it with.

My shoes are the lovely Corleone’s by Jeffrey Campbell and my beaded clutch is from Big Buddha. Luckily I had my gorgeous vintage fox fur to drape over my shoulders, and my sweet little black hand gloves for the perfect touch. What I find amusing, is the dress I’m wearing was the least expensive item of everything I have on! I got this dress for $8 at a small overstock/ sample shop in downtown LA’s garment district.

This look is certainly not for the shy personality, but it was a lot of fun to pull off and I felt like a glamorous princess all day! The wedding was fabulous, and despite no heel on my shoe, I danced all night long! 😉

A Spot of Tea, Gov’na?

And by tea… I mean pure, hard liquor. 😉

Let me start by saying this outfit was created around the shoes. My new Jeffrey Campbells. I’ve been creating a lot of outfits lately with gold accessories, and yet I didn’t have the shoes to match, so I’ve been on the hunt for some edgy Jeff Campbells with gold hardware instead of silver. As you may or may not know… JC shoes are rather expensive and these particular shoes I’ve had my eyes on for a while and were originally almost $300. Yikes!!! I checked online a few days ago and what do you know… they are on sale for $185. They were practically screaming at me to buy them. And I was going to buy them, oh yes…. I was going to buy them! Just before I clicked the “commit to buy” button, a thought popped into my head.

Check Craigslist.

First of all, I am a HUGE fan of Craigslist. Craigslist has brought me SO much good in my life and zero bad. Many people are hesitant to use the site because some idiot murderer had to go ruin it for all of us CL fans. I personally have used the site well over 100 times to buy, sell, meet and greet.

So on this merry day, I searched “Jeffrey Campbell shoes” on Craigslist in the Los Angeles area. What do you know… a girl is selling the EXACT shoes I want, in MY size…. AND!!!!!! She lives in Long Beach. It was truly meant to be. She sold me these babies BRAND NEW, still wrapped in the box for $120!!!!! Whaaaaaat?!?!?!? I KNOW! Thank YOU Craigslist!!! Here they are, in all their shiny, metallic, spiked glory:

You’re probably thinking either of two thoughts:

a) WOW! Those are crazy or b) Doesn’t she already have shoes like that?

Yes and yes. They are pretty wild… and sharp, and I do have similar style JC shoes… however the ultimate difference is the gold hardware. One of my fashion rules (and many other fashionistas) is that you simply cannot mix metals. You can’t have a bunch of silver jewelery on, with gold heels. Or vice versa. Pick a metal, and stick to it. Hence why I wanted to add some gold hardware shoes to my wardrobe. You get it.

The blazer is from Ross, $20. The bag is by Big Buddha which I scored for wholesale cost ($36) since I interned for the company. The Union Jack tank I’m wearing is by Forever 21, however I found it at a tiny little sample/factory sale store in downtown LA and paid $5 for it. The lovely little gold circle pins on my blazer are all vintage pieces that I picked up at a flea market in San Francisco.

Meeting with the Gov’na to grab a spot of “tea” at my local piano bar. 😉

I dedicate this post to Craig.
