Holy Holographic!

The last time I was into holograms and holographic material I was a young kid in the 90′s. I collected pogs and stickers. Pogs and stickers were cool, but when you got HOLOGRAPHIC pogs or stickers, it was like an entirely new level of extreme awesomeness.

Well holographic material is cooler than its ever been, coming in new forms far superior to pogs and stickers. Lately it’s been on bags, shoes, cell phone cases, even nail polish! And you know what? It looks damn cool in every shape and form.

This is definitely one of the few trends from the 90′s that I’m loving a re-run of. Holographic material pairs well with almost any color and it totally adds a fun, psychedelic, and futuristic element to an outfit.

A while back I stopped in at one of my favorite places to treasure hunt… Ross. I usually find a lot of good stuff at Ross and every now and then I find an absolute TREASURE. This was one of those days. As I combed through their sloppy aisles of handbags haphazardly hanging here, there and piled onto the floor, something caught my eye. Way in the back of about 20 small handbags all on one arm, a certain purse gleamed.

In an overly excited rush I managed to detangle it from the plethora of purses in an instant. A small hand bag by Nine West… in the most beautiful iridescent holographic material. It was love at first sight.

I couldn’t believe I found such a gorgeous, trendy bag. I always do my research because I like to know how much I saved, and I found this bag retails for around 40-50 dollars. I scored this beauty for $15!!!! YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!! It was meant to be. An absolute treasure.

Th good news is that I’m sure this trend will carry all the way through summer if not the whole year. So if you haven’t jumped on the hologram train yet, there’s still plenty of time. Last I checked Urban Outfitters had a whole cat load of holographic items and I think Forever 21 has a few pairs of holographic shoes. When in doubt, search the internets for exactly what you want.

Happy treasure hunting!

All Black Everything.

Ahhh the color black. What a deep, mysterious, and sumptuous shade. Anyone and everyone looks good in black and it goes with practically anything. Head to toe black can range from elegant gothic, to New York chic, to glam noir and most definitely edgy and fierce. <3 All black everything.

This look is definitely hitting on that edgy, fierce look that I love! My only suggestion about doing head to toe black is to utilize different textures and black on black prints to make the outfit pop.

I love that the top has this back detailing. Often times those trendy, billowy, shapeless tops make girls look bigger than they are because they don’t shape to their figure. These little buttons on the back, pull the top tighter around the waist and create more of a flattering shape. Why don’t all those billowy tops have this detail? I demand more!

These awesome, unique steampunk hair picks were sent to me courtesy of Antickquities, an Etsy shop that specializes in accessories made from clock hands. Her designs are so unique and very affordable! I have a few different styles of her wearable art, and I love them all!

And as many of you already know, thigh highs are waaayyyy trending right now! Not just thigh highs, but thigh highs over other stockings, or garter thigh highs. I recently ordered some really cute ones off eBay, just waiting for them in the mail! Upper thigh is the new upper arm. Ha!

Never Again 90′s.

When you look at past decades of women’s fashion all the way to the beginning of the 1900′s it’s hard to not love what you see. Frilly ruffles, soft materials, delicate beaded gloves, feathered hats, bold shoes and a shocking variety of hems and waistlines.

Fashion through the decades. 1910′s to 1980′s.

During the late 60′s and 70′s is when fashion trends started to venture off the beaten path, however most of the trends ( platform shoes, high waisted pants, and bold prints for example) were and still remain highly fashionable.

Then the 80′s happened. What happened in the 1980′s, I don’t know but fashion took a running dive off the deep end and so the fashion of the 1990′s turned into the dead, decaying, awful bloated corpse of 80′s fashion. Yes the 80′s was bad… but the 90′s? It’s like fashion wasn’t even trying.

Not. Even. Trying.

The worst part about it all? We are about to experience a full fledged 90′s fashion re-run as the pitiful decade of “fashion” comes back into style. I’ve seen 90′s trends creeping around in the shadows for a few years now (stomaching the vomit every time), but lately it’s creeping into the spotlight and I cannot figure out, why oh why are people finding this attractive? The 90′s was BY FAR the WORST decade of fashion EVER!!! I thought this was mutually agreed upon by everyone who can see, but apparently there is an entire breed of fashionista’s who think they’re doing something revolutionary by wearing an over-sized acid washed denim jacket with Aztec trim and smells like an old rabbit cage.

Big yellow smiley faces, over-sized flannel, body suits, paint splattered everything, nasty bungeed denim, OVERALLS and yin yangs are back; and people are actually buying it! Hopefully after a year or so people will realize their dire mistakes of reviving 90′s fashion and send it all back to where it came from… the 25 cent bin at the thrift store.

I know all the little 90′s fashion loving hipsters are crying right now…. “But… but… it’s VINTAGE!” Vintage it may be (in about another decade) HOWEVER, vintage or not, 90′s fashion is just plain ugg! Just because they wore it on Saved By the Bell and the Cosby show, doesn’t make it cute NOW.

Fashion from the 90′s decade should be locked into a box and mailed to NEVER AGAIN.

Make a Statement!

I cut, sliced and ripped my way into the crisp, sturdy cardboard box. Packing peanuts went flying as I searched for the shoe box somewhere inside this sea of white marshmallows. Finally I grab hold, pull it out and set it on the floor.

Time came to a standstill and without even noticing, I held my breath and bit my lip as I lifted the lid. Rays of sunshine burst out from the box blinding my sight instantaneously and music rang loud all around!

I couldn’t figure out how rays of sunshine had blinded me… how could this be… coming out from a box? As I regained my site, I peered down at my brand new beauties. It was then that I realized, indeed sun rays had escaped the box. The shiny golden spikes and studs covering the back of the leather boots had reflected the bright Californian sun into my face.

I grabbed them up, slid them on and sashayed around the house to get a feel for them. They fit like a glove and gave me an entirely new perspective on the world by adding about 5 inches to my height. My new Damsels. *sigh* :)

What’s that? We’re going to the mall? Perfect. Time to suit up with my new Damsels.

I’ve learned a lot about myself through style blogging. I’ve realized most of looks never feature just one statement piece… Usually I’ve got statement shoes, statement jewelry, statement hair and sometimes even statement makeup. It makes sense, since my whole life I’ve never held back to make a statement, verbally or visually.

In mainstream fashion, all these statement pieces in one outfit would be unacceptable. But I would hardly call my style of dress mainstream in any sort of way. As long as I can remember I’ve always used fashion to visually express my loud, out-going and firey personality. When you have a personality like mine, you just can’t help wearing 5 statement pieces at once. Besides what one person might to refer to as “statement” I might refer to as “details…”

Gorgeous gold!

Remember when yellow gold was really popular in the 80′s and early 90′s??? Then it became unpopular, and silver and white gold reigned for about a decade and a half and now here we are, with yellow gold going strong alongside various other metals (silver, platinum, white and rose gold). Crazy how even the color of a metal can be “in” one day and “out” the next.

I personally favor all silver, platinum, titanium, stainless steel AND all shades of golds. A different metal to match a different mood (and outfit of course!)

I recently picked up a few gold toned pieces that I adore and wanted to share:

All of the jewelry except the wrap watch are from sample sales that I attend in downtown LA every month. The wrap watch comes from a store called Blink (a sister store of Wet Seal) and was a gift from a friend.

Find your gold (even if it is just cheapy costume “gold”), dust it off, and let it shine.

Make it up with make up.

Feeling a little tribal on this night. I often build a look around a set of colors, an accessory or a single article of clothing. On this night my green, purple, black and white feather earrings that I bought from Beth Nouveau on Etsy took over my look.

Using green, purple, and a shimmery tan I painted my lids. The tribal dots are simply done with eyeliner and a steady hand. If anyone knows of a better make up for tribal paint jobs, please do share. After the shadows were on, I used loose purple glitter to go over the purple shadow for some sparkle! To apply loose glitter I’ve found this amazing product by Hard Candy, which you can find at Walmart:

Best glitter glue, EVER. Just make sure you’re using glitter specially made to be worn as make up, and not craft glitter! I love glitter and this product makes it soooo easy to wear.

This make up look is fun, different and definitely stands out in a crowd. And if anyone looks at you and says “why?” Well then you say, “It’s called STYLE, baby.”

Thank YOU for reading. <3

Handbag Overload

Hand bags were never my fashion weapon of choice, however I’ve recently opened my eyes wider to really take in their power. Yes it’s true, as many of us know, a great hand bag can really seal the deal on an amazing ensemble. I guess my little cross body, black zippered bag was enough for me all this time. Then I got an internship working with a hand bag company, and a CUTE hand bag company at that! Needless to say, hand bags came flooding into my life.

Big Buddha is owned by the ever popular Steve Madden, and is a vegan friendly hand bag company. Since I’ve been working for them, I’ve been so lucky to score samples for wholesale cost. Most of the bags retail for close to hundred dollars, but I’ve been collecting them at cost price, which is usually around 30 dollars. How could I resist? Especially on Sample Sale Friday which is when hundreds of showrooms in the California Mart, the New Mart and Cooper Design Space sell off last season’s samples. You can find incredible deals! Considering I’ve been running the sample sale for Big Buddha, I get first dibs on the collection of samples.

Here are a few items I’ve picked up so far:

Bondi, a cross body or shoulder bag depending on how you wear the chain.

Bailey, a navy blue clutch.

Tyler, an oversized black patent snakeskin tote that holds everything, including the kitchen sink! This bag was a gift from my boss on my first day.

Millie, a small, cross body bag that is super cute and perfect for the summer. Small bags are everywhere right now.

Talie is this gorgeous black clutch and the top part is covered with black gemstones of different sizes. My favorite clutch!

Ahhh yes, the Palm. This sweet bag has a woven chevron design on it, with two lovely tassles to sway with a brisk walk. I think this is my favorite bag of all the ones I’ve collected since working for Big Buddha.

I think I still have about a month left of interning, so I’m sure there will be more to collect! You can see all the current Big Buddha bags on their website here.
